Contact the Rochester Gay Men's Chorus

Ted Smith, Chair, Rochester Gay Men's ChorusWelcome to the Rochester Gay Men’s Chorus.

Over 30 years ago, five men met together in a living room and began what today has become a 50 plus member strong singing group. As we enter our 33rd Season, we want to thank all of our patrons, donors, sponsors, chorines and staff for a wonderfully uplifting journey.

When the RGMC was founded, the struggle for equality was still in its relative infancy and our founding and early members raised their voices to share their stories and talents in song, establishing the RGMC as a performance group known for its artistic excellence and commitment to the LGBT community.

And we continue to grow. Under the direction of Artistic Director Dr. Robert Strauss, the chorus now regularly features 50 plus singers on stage, along with our singularly unique dance troupe The Rochettes. The chorus regularly goes out into the community to sing at places such as SUNY Brockport and Genesee Community College, REAF, Asbury First United Methodist Church, the TedX talks, and more. This past season we celebrated the music of ABBA (in a sold out concert!) and were joined by the amazing, unbelievably talented Broadway star Liz Callaway!

We are excited this coming year to share with you our 33rd Season, beginning with the Christmas shows in December with the Genesee Valley Children’s Chorus, our salute to the Fabulous Female Singers in March, and closing in June with a selection of works making their Rochester premiere! This is also a GALA year, with the RGMC attending the GALA Festival of Choruses in Denver, Colorado in July 2016. We’re also excited to have our Alumni Committee making a strong start, bringing together former singers and volunteers with our current membership for events, socials, and more.

It is an honor and privilege to serve the chorus as its current Board Chair. The chorus membership is open to all and we pride ourselves on providing an inclusive, safe, and social place to come together, sing, and network. Our mission states “the Rochester Gay Men’s Chorus creates social change through excellence in the choral arts” and never have these words been truer or dearer to our hearts.

On behalf of the Rochester Gay Men’s Chorus, thank you for your support and we shall see you in the seats.

Ted Smith
